This is the story of Richard Datin, the man who built the starship Enterprise and the story of the Enterprise model itself. Written by Datin's daughter, the book includes family photos, personal letters, studio memos, production art, and much more to tell the story of the model builder and the model he built. Datin's early work in Hollywood involved model work for advertising, including the Green Giant commercials, and later, he built miniatures for the TV show Petticoat Junction. In 1964, he was hired by the Howard Anderson company to build the 3 foot miniature of the Enterprise and later oversaw the construction of the larger studio model. Detailed descriptions written by Datin about the construction and revisions are included in the book along with images of the original blueprints and decal sheets. There is additional information about the Shuttle Bay model and the K-7 miniature, also built by Datin. There are additional chapters covering his model work after Star Trek, and his later years as a railroad historian. Star Trek modelers will find this volume to be full of detail and fascinating information.
